In a rare and dramatic conclusion to this year’s Weyauwega-Fremont School Board election, the seat representing the Towns of Lind, Saxeville, and Waupaca came down to a literal draw from a hat.

Following the April 2nd election, candidates Joanie Buss and Trisha Loehrke each received exactly 1,277 votes, resulting in a tie. Per Wisconsin state law, when school board elections end in a tie and nomination papers were required, the winner is determined by drawing lots—a random process often involving names being drawn from a hat.
In this case, that’s exactly what happened.
Trisha Loehrke’s name was drawn, securing her the seat on the board. She responded to the unique outcome, saying:
"What an eventful election 🙂 I look forward to serving on the School Board to continue improving education and creating opportunities for students while backing our teachers."
Opponent Joanie Buss shared a gracious message with supporters on Facebook:
"In case you were not already aware, the voting on April 2nd resulted in a tie. (I know, what are the chances!) Both names were thrown in a hat, unfortunately, my name was not drawn. Congratulations to Trisha, I'm sure that you will keep the best interests of our students and school in mind."
Buss also thanked the community, adding:
"Your messages, calls, texts, sign postings, and general well wishes really meant a lot to me."
This rare finish highlights the importance of every single vote counts! Great job to all the election officials for an amazing election! Not one vote was missed! Do you have a story you want to share?
